A breast cancer foundation can help you feel less alone with your disease. When you are diagnosed with cancer, it's one of the most life-changing and isolating moments a person can have. You might feel as though nothing can shield you from the tumor inside you. It's a heavy weight on your shoulders.
It's a burden you don't have to carry on your own. There are many organizations that can help you get through this. Some help by providing support groups to help deal with the stress and emotional toll of cancer. Others might help you pay for treatment. We're going to cover most of them and what they do, starting with the American Cancer Society's breast cancer program.
The American Breast Cancer Society is the top breast cancer organization in America. They promote breast cancer awareness and try to get the word out on early mammograms. (These detect breast cancer earlier, making it easier to treat.) The American Cancer Society also raises funds for cancer research.
The ACS helps research into all kinds of cancers. It is a national, voluntary health organization. It's dedicated to saving lives and helping those with cancer. It was founded in 1913 as the American Society for the Control of Cancer. Its name was changed after World War II.
The ACS raises funds and awareness, as well as gives grants to researchers. Most of its focus is on fundraising events, like Relay for Life and the Great American Smoke Out. During these events, many people gather to show support for cancer fighters and remember loved ones they've lost to cancer. Most people form teams that donate and join events to raise awareness.
The organization also has thrift stores. Here, people can give items to the store. The ACS then sells the items. This works a lot like the Salvation Army thrift stores.
The funds that the ACS makes are given as grants to researchers. Funds are also used for public health advertising. Because of this, in part, the ACS is regarded as one of the most popular charitable groups throughout the world. In addition, the organization also earns money when stores sell pink items where part of the money goes towards breast cancer research.

"Whether you're a patient, or a family member of a patient, or even someone who wants to help those with cancer, these foundations allow you to help." What the ACS doesn't do, however, is give direct help to cover costs. For that, there's the American Breast Cancer Foundation.
This organization, founded in 1997, gives money to hospitals for new equipment that will help breast cancer patients. However, it also puts donations right into treatment costs for patients. They work with doctors and those who make drugs to buy chemotherapy and breast cancer drugs at lower prices. Then, they can get the discount drugs to the patients who need them.
In addition to help with cancer treatment costs, the American Breast Cancer Foundation also has outreach and counseling programs. Those with cancer can join these programs and get emotional support.
Funds are also available if you've gone through treatment. You can use the money for things like wigs and plastic surgery. The money can also help with the bills when you’re unable to work due to the rigors of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
These two organizations are the biggest fundraisers for breast cancer and awareness. Another foundation, called Susan G. Komen for the Cure was started by a woman who lost her sister to breast cancer. This foundation is the oldest fundraiser that has always focused specifically on breast cancer research.
Whether you're a patient, or a family member of a patient, or even someone who wants to help those with cancer, these foundations allow you to help. Donating through these organizations will magnify its impact
These organizations allow the help of hundreds of thousands of people to add up to real advances in breast cancer research.
