Breast Cancer and Diet

Following a recommended diet can help prevent the onset of breast cancer.Breast cancer and diet requires research and sensible eating

Breast cancer and diet is the new tamoxifen. Nutrition is emerging as a very important way to prevent breast cancer. Years of research are finally yielding some optimistic results.

Tamoxifen:

  • High-risk women who took the drug decreased their risk of breast cancer by 45%.
  • The National Cancer Institute reported on these findings.
  • It diminishes the effort of estrogen, the cheif fuel for breast cancer growth.
  • It blocks the estrogen receptor in the cells.

Breast Cancer Prevention

A breast cancer diet can offer the benefits of medication without the risks. The risks of tamoxifen are blood clots and uterine cancer. You may be able to prevent that risk by altering your diet. Include foods that are known to be anti-cancer agents.

Diana Dwyer at age 45 was diagnosed for the second time with cancer. She offers a diet plan that has kept her cancer free for five years. Her hope is that her diet can help all women fight breast cancer. The basics of Diane’s plan are:

  • 3 to 6 servings a day of whole grain food. Use brown rice, bulgur and wheatberries. Buy only whole grain products.
  • 1 or 2 servings a day of beans. Put beans in everything from soup to salads to pizza. Your digestive system will adjust to the beans.
  • A handful of nuts several times a week. They are a great source of fiber and monounsaturated fats, a breast cancer foe.
  • 9+ servings a day of fruits and vegetables. Those fruits and vegetables are loaded with cancer-fighting phytoehemicals. Getting nine servings a day doesn't happen by accident. Every single day try to include something from these groups:
  • Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower
  • Lycopene rich produce: tomatoes, red grapefruit, watermelon, guava
  • Beta-carotene rich produce: winter squash, carrots, sweet potatoes
  • Citrus fruits: oranges and grapefruits
  • Berries: strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries
  • Dark green, leafy veggies: spinach, romaine, kale, collards, Swiss chard
  • Shiitake mushrooms are good once a week
  • 1 or 2 servings a day of low-fat dairy products. Use 1% fat milk because it contains a molecule called conjugated linoleic acid, which has promising anticancer activity. It is best to drink milk from non-BST treated cows. BST is a growth hormone passed into the milk.
  • 1 or 2 servings a day of soy products. Soybeans contain many potentially anticarcinogenic compounds. The isoflavones in soy are weak estrogen compounds. There is some controversy about the benefit of isoflavones.
  • Fatty fish two or three times a week. The omega-3 fats in fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring may help fight breast cancer.
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed a day. Flax is the source of a weak antiestrogen that may be useful. Flax also supplies a plant form of omega-3 fats.
  • 4 to 6 cups a day of green tea. It contains a chemical EGCG that is promising for anticancer activity.
Exercise is important also. Walking 2 to 3 miles a day most of the week is really good for your metabolism. It is worth noting that Diana is registered dietician. She researched all she could about anti-cancer diets. Diana’s breast cancer diet has kept her cancer free for five years.

"Her hope is that her diet can help all women fight breast cancer."

Other Research

Doctor John Glaspy of the UCLA Comprehensive Cancer Center published a study about breast cancer and diet.

  • It appeared in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
  • He fed some rats with breast tumors omega-6 fats, corn oil and safflower oil.
  • He fed some other rats with breast tumors omega-3 fats, fish oils.
  • The cancer tumors shriveled in the omega-3 group of rats.
Next, he asked a group of breast cancer survivors to ingest large quantities of fish oils. Dr. Glaspy found:
  • Dramatic changes in three short months.
  • The actual structure of the breasts had changed and
  • They had become far more resistant to breast cancer.

Doctor Lillian Thompson is from the University of Toronto. What she discovered in her research about breast cancer and diet is:
  • That breast cancer size actually decreases with a daily course of flaxseed.
  • Flaxseed is made of two critical parts:
    • The oil which is the healthiest you can eat
    • A special fiber from the hull that protects you against cancer.
Evidence based nutritional analysis is why thousands of American women are already on a breast cancer diet. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer or if you are a survivor, you have nothing to lose trying some of these changes to your diet. Do it one at a time. The results could be staggering.
