Breast Cancer Awareness Day

breast cancer awareness day is celebrated by this family

Breast cancer awareness day has helped thousands of people and pushed the research much faster toward a cure.

There is a lot of support out there for women with breast cancer. Especially on Breast Cancer Awareness Day. It is celebrated on the fourth Monday every October. It is part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The day celebrates the survivors of breast cancer and helps promote research in breast cancer.

People celebrate the day differently:

  • Some wear pink on that day.
  • Others write essays and articles about breast cancer.
  • There are some races on that day that raise money for breast cancer.
  • News reports on breast cancer increase on that day.

Breast Cancer Awareness Day is really the core day of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a month that is sponsored by public service organizations related to breast cancer, medical associations and government agencies. All of these agencies work together to help make people aware of breast cancer.

  • People learn about getting screening mammograms.
  • They learn about breast self exam and doctor’s visits for breast cancer.
  • They learn about survivors of breast cancer and the importance of picking up breast cancer early.
  • It was recently the 25th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the supporters of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women need to take charge of their own healthcare and get the right tests to detect breast cancer. Treatment of breast cancer is important, too. The supporters make sure people understand the best treatments available.

The American Breast Cancer Society Helps People With Breast Cancer

The American Breast Cancer Society was established in 1993. Its mission is to get rid of breast cancer in our lifetime. They want women to know that it is important to find breast cancer early and that it makes a difference in survival rate. The volunteers have the goal of funding all kinds of breast cancer research. They want to have reduced cost mammograms for people who can’t afford them.

Activities of the American Breast Cancer Society include:

  • providing free mammograms to those who have no money to pay for them.
  • town hall meetings to increase awareness of breast cancer.
  • getting a breast cancer article in a newspaper or magazine.
  • writing letters to Congress about breast cancer
  • host events that raise money for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
  • making sure there are enough support groups for women with breast cancer.
  • lobbing congress.
  • They also host bike marathons, benefit dances, dinners, races, tennis tournaments and golf tournaments.

The Avon Foundation helps Breast Cancer

The Avon Foundation was developed in 1955 to help women. Its main focus is breast cancer, domestic violence, and emergency relief. It provides funds for women with a need to have a mammogram but cannot afford it. It gives millions of women worldwide access to health care, information. Treatment for breast cancer is available to women who need it but cannot afford it.

The Avon Foundation is one of the biggest foundations out there for breast cancer that is totally volunteer and non-profit. There are hundreds of smaller foundations out there that help women locally or regionally to get support for breast cancer.

Support Groups Make a Difference

Look for a breast cancer article in a local newspaper to find out where there are support groups. Many hospitals and cancer centers have support groups. Support groups are terrific because they help women who have had breast cancer. They are good for women with:

  • newly diagnosed breast cancer
  • those undergoing treatment for breast cancer and
  • those who have healed from breast cancer

Support groups help women understand breast cancer.
They give emotional support to women with breast cancer.
They give information to women who do not understand their treatment.
Doctors and nurses can help facilitate breast cancer support groups.
Women who have had breast cancer can be facilitators.
There can be a few survivors in the group or many survivors.
Women dying from breast cancer can benefit from support groups.

Family Support For Breast Cancer

Your family can be a big support for breast cancer survivors. Family members can go to doctor’s appointments with the breast cancer patient. You can go with a family member to the hospital to have chemotherapy or surgery.

It is important to survival that a patient with breast cancer get support from friends and family, especially during diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Support Comes From Many Sources

government agencies
non-profit associations and societies
support groups
reading material on breast cancer in the paper or on the internet.

But the best breast cancer support comes from friends and family members who make sure the patient is never alone in their struggle.
